Tuesday’s Teaser – Spin The Bottle

So, I had to get inventive for this book. After all, the games that are played in the Party Games series all have an adult twist to them. For Spin The Bottle I had to come up with a way to turn a simple spin’n’kiss game into something else entirely. I think I nailed it. 😉

Mac had searched every room in the house twice and was on his third circuit when he finally spotted Lillian. Two brawny guys had her sandwiched between them, their sides pressed against hers, which was totally unnecessary as far as he was concerned, there was ample room around the table. His jaw clenched. They leaned towards her, crowding into her personal space as she laughed at something one of them said. He wanted to walk over, shove them both aside and pull her out of her seat, away from the game.

Spin The Bottle.

His hands fisted, fingers curled into his palm until the sting of his nails gave him a focal point other than the murderous thoughts he currently had. Mac kept his distance, he didn’t want to tip Lilli off to his presence yet. Eight players circled the table, two of whom were at present engaged in a game of tonsil hockey. The bottle sat in a round container that had dividing lines dissecting the base in equal eighths. A pile of cards were passed from one of the tonsil hockey participants to the guy on Lil’s left. Mr. Muscles flipped over the top card and grinned. With a twist of his wrist, he sent the bottle spinning.

Everyone quietened down as the guy read out the card in his hand. “Round and round the bottle goes, where it stops nobody knows. When your turn is done it’s time for fun. Before it ends, kiss arse or you won’t be friends.”

What the fuck? Mac remembered Spin The Bottle as a simple spin and kiss game, this adult adaptation didn’t remotely resemble anything in his memory. He stood straighter and angled himself for a better view of that spinning glass vial. Each rotation knotted his gut muscles tighter. The thought of it coming to a halt with the neck pointing in Lilli’s direction had him grinding his teeth. There was no way he would let that creep get his mouth anywhere near her rear end.

A gust of air burst from his lungs as the bottle slowed and finally came to a stop facing away from Lil. The blond woman across the table pushed back her chair and stood. With a grin that appeared alcohol assisted she jumped up on the seat and thrust her mini-skirt covered arse out.

“Come on, Daryl, pucker up.” Giggling, she wobbled on the chair but gained her balance by grabbing the shoulders of the guy next to her.

“Careful, Jessica.”

He was pretty sure it was Australia’s notoriously famous texting cricket star stopping Jessica from taking a tumble. Mac wasn’t at all surprise to see the athlete leaning over to get a good look up the woman’s super-short skirt, or that he managed to cop a feel of her boobs while holding her steady.

Daryl made it around the table in an instant and wasted no time with the arse kissing. Mac’s mouth dropped open when Daryl grabbed the hem of Jessica’s skirt and pushed it up to reveal bare skin. Shocked to find himself unable to turn away, he watched as Daryl did far more than kiss-arse. Jesus, the guy buried his face in the woman’s crotch and proceeded to eat her out with everyone looking on. Neither of them seemed to recall where they were as they became engrossed in their foreplay. And that’s what it was. Mac had watched plenty of porn in his life, even been to a sex show or two but this wasn’t about the audience, it was about the participants. He’d never been so turned on and disgusted at the same time in his life.

Mac jerked his gaze away from the carnal display and focused on Lilli. She looked everywhere but at the couple across the table. Somehow the fact she wasn’t watching like the rest of the party goers unfurled a few of the ribbons of tension in his gut. Cheers and whistles filled the air, the roar of approval competing with the music pounding through the speakers placed in each corner. From the corner of his eye, Mac saw the couple break apart and Daryl help the woman retake her seat before coming back to reclaim the one next to Lilli. He was pleased to see her shift her chair away as the guy sat beside her.

Damn. Lilli was up next.

Not bad huh? So who wants to play?

OMG There’s a Flower Growing Out of it!

Here are a few pearls of wit from my kids, to be filed under category, you gotta love ’em”

The other day Princess and Cherub were wrestling on the couch and this was the conversation I overheard:

Cherub: (presenting buttocks) Smell my butt

Princess: No way!

Cherub: Come on, it’s grown into a flower

I was laughing too much to reprimand her for, I assume, attempting to fart in her sister’s face.

One night this week we were playing ‘What am I?’ with the girls. Princess was giving clues like; I have lots of wheels and a big body and I drive on the road. Hubby tried to help Cherub out by whispering ‘Truck’. Having misheard his clue she shouted, “Dragon!”. When Princess said no, it was a truck, Cherub rolls her eyes at her dad, as though he were quite dense. “I didn’t think it was dragon!”

While playing the same game, it was Cherubs turn to give clues. This was how it went:

I have no legs, no arms, no face, no anything at all.

The answer in case you were wondering (we all were), was “I’m a cup”

Last week Princess and I were in the supermarket, going through the chilled food section. Rubbing her hands up and down her arms, she commented, “I’m cold. You can tell because I have chicken pops.”

I then had to explain the difference between Chicken Pox and Goosebumps. Why do we name these reactions of the flesh after birds?

One night when I was putting Cherub to bed, I asked her, “How much do I love you?”. She spread her arms out wide to show I loved her as far as I could stretch my arms and beyond (she’d done this before, you see). On this particular night I asked her in return, “How much do you love me?”

Cherub replied, “Six.”

Recently Princess was on the phone to her grandparents. Her grandma asked her how she was, to which Princess responded, “I’m perfect of course!”

Nothing like the confidence of a six year old 🙂

Have a great weekend,

Tuesday Teaser – Spin The Bottle

Today’s tease is brought to you by Mac and Lil. 🙂

Mac waited for Lil to come out of her bathroom. She’d been in there less than a minute but that was sixty seconds too long as far as he was concerned. He wanted to know what that arsehole downstairs had done to her. Needed to know. The rage that had surged through him when he’d seen Lilli pinned beneath Aaron Watson had nearly crippled him. When he pulled the man off her and smelled the liquor emanating from the Armani clad jerk Mac’s gut had rolled. Numerous scenarios flashed through his mind between the time he dumped Watson’s celebrity arse on the floor and checked on Lil.

At first he’d thought the worst and he still wasn’t convinced he shouldn’t go down and beat the shit out of Australia’s favourite TV face. Mac smiled, the image of a busted up Aaron hosting his game show bringing him mild satisfaction. But the incident furthered his anger at Lil for having this stupid party in the first place. If she’d just stuck with what he wanted—

The door across the room opened and Lilli stepped out. The black dress had been replaced with a skin coloured one. But unlike the previous dress, this one didn’t coat her body like paint. This one flowed, skimming over her curves like hot fudge on ice cream. He licked his lips and shifted position so she wouldn’t see the hard-on that had sprung to life the second she moved into sight. Damn, she was sex on legs. Long, smooth, tan legs left bare by her thigh length hem.

She wandered over to where she’d kicked off her fuck-me heels and bent to slip them on. Her hem inched higher giving him a flash of the silky skin on her inner thighs. He knew how soft that area was. Knew how it slid beneath his fingertips with tantalizing ease. Mac swallowed, his throat going dry as he remembered having his hand on that supple flesh earlier. God, she was a distraction. He’d entered her room with the intention of finding out how her dress had been torn, not to think about stripping her out of it.

Giving himself a mental shake, he swung his legs over the side of the bed and sat forward, his elbows resting on his knees, Mac continued to watch her move. “Tell me what happened.”

She jerked, just a small jolt before her body went perfectly still. He studied her closely, didn’t want to miss any tell-tale twitch or tick that may indicate she wasn’t being honest with him. Mac had no doubt she would try to slip a pair of rose-coloured glasses over the encounter. She’d do everything she could to minimise what had happened. Her chest rose as she sucked in a breath and brought her gaze to meet his.

“We were talking but Aaron obviously has had too much to drink and he stumbled.” Her eyes skittered away for a second but her shoulders pulled back and she met his gaze once more. “Honestly, it was my own fault for trying to stop him from falling.”

Mac narrowed his eyes. She was lying. Angry at her for protecting that shallow prick he jumped to his feet and stormed across the room. He brought his face within a breath of hers. “Bullshit!”

Her eyes went wide and he watched as fear, guilt and finally anger slashed across their sparkling depths.

“Don’t lie to me,” he growled.

“You’re forgetting one thing, Mac. I don’t owe you anything, lie or not, I don’t have to explain myself to you.” She punctuated her final word with a finger poke to his chest.

With her shoes on they were eye to eye and the fire shooting from hers did some seriously weird shit to his equilibrium. He’d always liked a good battle, he wasn’t a brilliant lawyer for nothing and regardless of Lil’s earlier accusation, he hadn’t gotten where he was by riding his best friend’s coattails. He liked to fight and hated to lose. Blood rushed through his veins, the thrill of combat causing an effect he’d never dealt with in the courtroom or anywhere else for that matter. His pants grew snug over his throbbing erection. A grin pulled at the corner of his mouth but Mac refused to let it form completely. Heaven forbid Lilli work out he was getting off on their clash of wills.

“Yes. You do.” He wrapped his fingers around her nape. “And this is why.”

Mac slammed his mouth on hers. His tongue immediately thrust out to force its way between her lips. This wasn’t a kiss. It was a claim. He took advantage of her gasp and pushed his way inside. Heat. Slick molten pleasure waited in the dark and he plunge deeper. Lilli’s body held stiff in his arms and everything he had, everything he was, wanted her to yield. To hand herself over completely. Freely.

He gripped her neck tighter, his fingers digging in, bringing her closer. Mac’s other hand curled around her waist, scrunched silky fabric in his fist. She moaned, the soft sound vibrated across his tongue and slipped down his throat as he breathed it in—breathed her in. Want and need overtook him. He’d never get over the way she made him yearn with such intensity. No more than a look, a simple movement, and his body went up in flames, but touch her…. Touch her and he spontaneously combusted. From the hair on his head to the nails on his toes, Mac exploded in a raging inferno he had no hope of extinguishing without her.

Sharing the Cover Love

This is the quickest post ever, because a picture is worth a thousand words. I’m so thrilled I can finally share it, the finalised cover of my next release, Erica’s Choice. Ain’t she beautiful?

Edit induced exhaustion

It’s been a marathon few weeks for me edit-wise. I have two books coming out soonish, one in May, one in July, and the books have been edited back to back. (Usually I have a couple months break between edits at least.)

Now please don’t think edits only involve the books. They don’t. There’s also the little matter of writing and editing the blurbs, the taglines and the warnings as well. Yeah, I know. They seem soooo simple. But seriously? They’re not. Tricky little devils those blurbs. There’s so little space to write so much AND capture the reader’s attention, it’s quite an art. (One I haven’t quite mastered.) Fortunately, we have a blurb editor at Samhain to help us along the way.

I’d thought the blurb for my May release, Office Affair, was all done and finished, but edits on the book changed the story a little, so the blurb had to be redone. As did the tagline. Just as I finished the second round for that blurb, so I had to focus on the blurb for my July release, Colors of Love (Speed, Book 2).

Now I have two sparkly new blurbs to show for my two sparkly new books. Well, actually, only one book’s all sparkly at the moment. The other is still mid-edit.

Don’t get me wrong. I know I sound like I’m complaining, but really, I’m not. I love the editing process. I love that opportunity to take a book that’s good enough and make it shine. And time and again, I am stunned by my editor’s incredible insights and suggestions. She’ll look at my story and just magically know what to do to make it better.

Why am I going on about this now? Because *Ahem* I shouldn’t be here blogging. I’m on deadline. I have to get the edits for Colors of Love back to my editor tonight. So really, it’s all I can think about.Which prompts me to finish off this blog, and open up that Word document once again.

I’ll leave you with my two sparkling new blurbs. (Coz yeah. I wanna show them off.)

All work and no play? Not for this girl. Not anymore.

Melissa Sparks has had enough. Enough of being the high achiever, enough of ignoring her social life in favor of her job and enough of being lonely. Just this once she wants a change. Something different. Something that looks very much like her business associate, Ben Cowley.

Ben Cowley is all alone in the deserted offices of Preston Elks. He’s gorgeous, he’s single and he’s been her secret fantasy for the last two years. It’s a split-second decision, but there’s no going back.

When Ben looks up from his desk, the last thing he expects to see is his too-serious, straight-laced colleague stripping naked. It’s been a year since his last relationship ended, and though he’s still picking up the pieces, Melissa throws his carefully balanced world off its axis. So does her offer: a brief affair, no strings attached.

Right about the time he realizes a simple affair will never be enough, she’s back in professional mode—and clearly as distant as ever. Now it’s up to him to show her that what they have is no fluke…and he’ll do whatever it takes to convince her. Even if it means inviting another man into their bed.

Warning: This book contains a man haunted by his past decisions, a woman determined to succeed, sex hot enough to steam up every office window on the block, and a voyeur who gets off watching those windows steam up.

(Office Affair releases May 1st at Samhain)

Their true colors are hidden…until one woman turns everything upside down.

Speed, Book 2

Seth Pace, guitarist of the rock band Speed, is a born dreamer, and nothing stands in his way of making those dreams a reality. Except when it comes to band manager Luke Struthers. He’s everything Seth wants in a partner, but even after five years of perfectly explosive sex, Luke refuses to commit.

After a childhood ravaged by abuse, Luke knows he’s a potential danger to anyone foolish enough to love him. Seth is safer without him, but Luke has no idea how to cut him loose painlessly. Until he spots Seth’s kind of woman—pretty, smart, friendly. The plan: seduce her into a sexy threesome, then leave the two alone to fall in love. Problem solved.

A night of excitement with the two hottest men on the planet? Yeah, baby! Yet Kaz’s inborn ability to read auras tells her something isn’t right. It’s obvious Seth and Luke are madly in love, but subtle clues in Luke’s aura signal he’s up to something. She’s not sure what, but if she doesn’t do something quick, the two men she’s quickly come to adore will wind up without the happily ever after they both deserve.

Warning: One man + one man + one woman = a whole lot of steamy two-way and three-way M/M & M/M/F sex, a hero or two to drool over, and a heroine who recognizes true love when she sees it.

Colors of Love releases of the 24th of July at Samhain)

Tuesday Teaser

Who’s up for a little tease?

Unedited snippet from Sand, Surf and Sunni.

“Why…?” She brought her hand up and covered her lips with trembling fingers. “You kissed me. Like you wanted to.”

Rand laughed. “Don’t sound so surprised, Sunshine. I want to do a hell of a lot more than kiss you.”

Her disbelief made him laugh harder. “Shit, Sunni, you have no idea how much.”

She studied him a moment before glancing over her shoulder at the door where he could hear Z in the other room talking on the phone. Her gaze returned to meet Rand’s. “What about Z?”

“Oh I’m pretty sure he’d give his left nut to go well beyond a kiss.”

“Who’s giving up a nut and to whom?” Z asked as he rejoined them.

“You are for more than a kiss with Sunni.” Rand watched Sunni’s cheeks turn a deeper red as he enlightened Z.

“No shit Sherlock. She can have both and any other body part she’s interested in for that matter.” Zeke sat on the other side of Sunni, sandwiching her between them.

Rand’s mind instantly thought of other ways to wedge her between their bodies. His nostrils flared as he dragged in a deep breath. The images flickering across his brain were ones he’d seen in numerous porn movies but he’d never entertained doing them in real life. Certainly never imagined Sunni, Z and himself in the starring roles. Only right now he wasn’t just thinking about it, he was trying to figure out the best way to suggest they turn Sunni’s earlier flippant comment about sharing her into reality. And the more he thought about it the more he wanted it with a bone deep urgency he struggled to control.

“What are you thinking, Rand?” Z eyed him from the other end of the couch.

“How well the three of us fit together.” He swallowed hard, took a breath and went for it. “How well that would translate to sex.”

Beer sprayed from Sunni’s mouth. “Sex?” She broke into a fit of coughing.

“Oh man.” Z thumped Sunni’s back. “Didn’t see that one coming but I have to admit I’m intrigued.”

“You are?” Sunni squeaked as she tried to catch her breath.

Dirty and Dangerous

Well our tagline says it all. We are all of us flirty, dirty and dangerous. I just never thought that translated to dirty old woman.

I was browsing for pics of Bradley Cooper today… just coz. I heard he’s actually super smart and that’s kind of a turn on so now I’m swooning a little. But in my quest to find sexy pics of a man who’s a perfectly appropriate age for me (only 4yrs younger so yeah, appropriate. Now if I could just work out the geographical distance thing and the fact that he’s made out with Scarlett Johanson and named sexiest man of the year and, oh yeah, the fact I’m married, then we’d be sweeeeet. Me and Bradley would be ON it tells ya), I came across a lot of images of other guys too. What can I say my mouse just works without my consent a lot of the time. But after a while I started to realise all these cuties were sadly WAY TOO YOUNG for a 40yr old mother of 2 such as myself. I started to wonder if I was a dirty old perv. I mean when I was younger I was into guys like Harrison Ford (Han Solo and Indiana Jones, you know it) and Richard Gere, men older than me by quite a bit. And while I’d still give those silver foxes a run for their money (or at least a really spritely walk), more and more I’m finding the men I see and go WOW LOOK AT THOSE ABS are so YOUNG.  Argh.

I was perfectly fine with turning 40. Now I think getting older sucks. What do you think?

This boy was born in 1992. I’d been legally drinking in licensed establishments for 4 yrs by then.

I mentioned this shot on twitter today because it had so thoroughly distracted me from my work. Jared Padalecki is a little closer to my age, but he was born the year before I started high school, so still not really in my bracket. But now I want to break something in my house so he can come and weld it for me.

Aussie cutie Liam Hemsworth starred with Miley Cyrus in The Last Song. After that he began dating her. A man who’s in Hannah Montana’s age group, really isn’t in mine.

I have no idea who this guy is, but I bet you $100 he’s not a day over 25.

I think it’s official. I’m a dirty old woman. Perhaps Bradley, who started this whole thing, ought to make me feel better.

Now he’s more my age, and he’s wearing a suit like a real grown up and all. There’s hope for me yet :).

Have a great weekend,

THE ARRA Awards: Coming this Saturday Night

(Just a little note before you start reading. Yes, I have cheated. I’ve copied this post directly from International Heat. Apologies, but I am lazy that way.)

We have a very exciting evening headed our way this Saturday.  It’s the Australian Romance Readers Association Award night. Which means a few things:

1) It’s time to dress up all fancy shmancy and bring out the bling. (Cool, I haven’t had a chance to do this for a while.)

2) We get to see heaps of old friends we haven’t seen since the last conference. There’ll be romance readers and writers alike, and even friends coming in from out of town for the event.

3) Our hearts will be pumping like crazy!

So, who am I referring to when I say “we” and why will our hearts be pumping? The we would be fellow Divas, Lexxie Couper, Rhian Cahill and myself. (Oh, and our hubbies.) And the reason our hearts will be racing? We’re all nominated for awards. (Although I think Lex may have been nominated for 25 or more.)

Here’s what we were nominated for:

1) Lexxie Couper – Agent

2) Lexxie Couper – Triple Dare

3) Lexxie Couper – Endless Lust

4) Rhian Cahill – All Of You

5) Jess Dee – See You In My Dreams

1) Rhian Cahill  – Coyote Hunger series

1) Lexxie Couper

So, think of us on Saturday night, and please, wish us luck.

In honor of the evening, I’m gonna post a little excerpt from my nominated book. See You In My Dreams is a hot, contemporary romance with just a hint of fantasy.  Rock star, Jamie Speed – AKA, Nathan Pace –  quite unexpectedly falls for the cleaning lady, Sophie Butler. Nathan doesn’t want Sophie to discover his alter ego, so he hides it from her, as long as he possibly can…

See You In my Dreams: An Excerpt

Sophie froze.

The breath left her lungs in a whoosh.

She stared at him, open-mouthed. God, he didn’t just look like Nathan, he could be Nathan!

No, impossible. He couldn’t.

Sophie chastised herself for being a fool. Of course he couldn’t be Nathan. They were two different people.

The last time she’d seen Nathan, he’d been naked, his longish blond hair mussed from their lovemaking, and the whiskers on his chin had scraped her cheek as he’d given her that one final kiss goodbye.

Jamie wore a pair of faded Levi’s and a trendy, white button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled halfway up his arms. His cheeks and chin were clean-shaven and his light brown hair neatly trimmed to frame his beautiful face. His mouth was half hidden by the microphone.

Sophie didn’t need a clear view to see his lips were delectably full and lusciously kissable. Just like Nathan’s.

Exactly like Nathan’s.

So much like Nathan’s that when Jamie dropped the mike from his face, Sophie’s heart smashed against her ribs. Her legs wobbled, her knees buckled and she collapsed back into her seat.

It’s not Nathan. You know it’s not.

Logic told her it couldn’t be. Instinct told her just the opposite.

The eyes were too different. Jamie’s were impossibly green, Nathan’s nut-brown.

She stared at Jamie, watched him dance and sing, watched him seduce the crowd, flirt, throw his head back. Watched him lift his head again, look straight at her and smile.

Dear God.

Jamie Speed had just smiled Nathan’s smile. At her.

Her heart skipped a beat. Or ten.

Impossible. He wasn’t smiling at her. He wasn’t even looking at her. And if he was, it had to be a coincidence. No way would he be able to pick her out from a crowd of forty thousand.

Then why did she feel his gaze all the way down to her toes? Why did his smile send a million shivers across her skin? Why did he…

…blow me a kiss?

No! He didn’t. Hadn’t. She was imagining it. Going crazy.

Tasha grabbed her arm. “Fuck, Soph. Jamie just blew you a kiss.”

“Nathan,” Sophie whispered.

“What?” Tasha asked.

Sophie just shook her head and stared at the stage, her heart pounding frantically.

Could it be?

Impossible! No way. Not in a million years. Nathan and Jamie? The same person? No.

Fuck, how did she reconcile what her body knew with what her brain told her?

Could the man up there possibly be the same one she’d shared an afternoon of decadent sex with?

Welcome Our Special Guest – Rachael Johns

Today I’d like to welcome to the Diva Couch a lady I met back in 2007 at my first ever Romance Writer’s of Australia conference. I’d just sold my first two books to Samhain Publishing and Rachael was an aspiring writer dreaming of the day she too could get that coveted ‘first sale’ ribbon. Well I’m so happy to say Rachael is now a Carina Press author! Please join me in welcoming Rachael today.

Your first book One Perfect Night, was published by Carina Press in December 2011. Tell us what it’s been like transitioning from aspiring writer to published author.

BUSY!! Crazy busy in fact. One thing I thought about but didn’t completely grasp the hugeness of before selling was the work that comes AFTER a book gets accepted but prior to publication. I had planned on being 60k into a new book by the end of January, instead I’ll hit 30k if I’m lucky. Because in the time when I anticipated writing, I had rewrites for one book and edits on JILTED (which will be out in June – yes, tiny little plug)! In terms of transition, I’m not sure I still quite believe that I’ve actually achieved the first step in my dream (next step is to publish more books), so I have to keep talking to myself and telling myself that this is SERIOUS BUSINESS and it’s okay to be selfish about taking time out to do it.

How many full manuscripts did you write before you finally hit paydirt with One Perfect Night?

Oh golly, now you’re asking! I wrote about four diabolical single titles and wrote five (I think) full novels aimed at Mills and Boon before FINALLY selling the sixth category-length attempt to Carina. I had a crazy belief that if I kept going, one day I’d make it.

Sami: and write you were (I do so love a pun)

Tell us a little about the book, and show us that gorgeous cover!

ONE PERFECT NIGHT is about Cameron and Peppa who are both wounded by their pasts. Cameron lost his beloved wife and Peppa is recovering from the most hellish of break-ups. But what I love most about the book is that Cameron  (a seemingly strong hero totally in control of his world) is so broken that he has night terrors and therefore is too scared to ever spend the whole night with a woman. When he finally wakes up at Peppa’s house, he’s freaked by the intimacy between them! And he backs away, until fate steps in and makes keeping his distance pretty much impossible!

(Sami: Here’s where you can buy One Perfect Night)

What are you working on right now?

I have two things on the go. A single title called MAN DROUGHT, about a city girl who buys a rundown country pub and ends up reviving the whole town as well as winning the heart of the frosty hero. And a shorter romance called HOLLYWOOD DREAMS, which is the second in a series I’m hoping to sell to Carina.

I’m fond of grouping my favourite things into groups of five, so I’m going to ask you do do the same
