Cheers, Lizzie!

Australia is still a monarchy. We are, technically, part of the British Commonwealth. The Commonwealth is an intergovernmental organisation of 54 independent member states, of which Australia is one. Because of that, it’s only right we celebrate the Queen’s birthday by having a day off work (cause that’s really what we Aussies love the most).

Now here’s the thing: the Queen’s birthday is 21st April. We Aussies celebrate her birthday on the second Sunday in June. Yes, that’s right, the second Sunday in June. Not a specific date, let alone the actual date of the Queen’s birthday.

Why do we do that?

Essentially, we wanted to have a reason to have a government-approved long weekend in June and figured celebrating the Queen’s birthday would be the best way to it.

So on that note, Happy Birthday, Lizzie. We assumed you partied hard back on April 21 😉 Have a belated beer and Tim Tam on us.
